Project 4: Palm Seed Sowing

On August 31, 2025, we organized a Palm Seed Sowing Ceremony at the Athupakkam Lake area, Gummidipoondi. Unlike previous years, where we invited a traditional chief guest for the event, this time the children from our community proudly took on that role. They enthusiastically joined hands with youngsters to sow palm seeds, symbolizing the next generation’s active involvement in protecting nature. This initiative focuses on spreading awareness about environmental protection and nurturing a sense of responsibility among the youth to safeguard our planet for the future.

Over the past two years, we have sown 30,000 palm seeds, and this year we added another 10,000 in a single day of coordinated effort. The success of this massive seed sowing activity was made possible by the support of the people of Athupakkam, the dedicated EverGreen Foundation members, and the spirited children who participated with joy and commitment. Together, we continue to take meaningful steps toward creating a greener and more sustainable tomorrow.

SEED COLLECTION

Key Points

  • Location: Panangadu village, Andhra Pradesh, which has over 1,000 palm trees.

  • Collection: 10,000 palm seeds were gathered on August 26 & 27, 2025.

  • Quality Control: The collected seeds were tested for quality.

  • Transportation: The seeds were packed and delivered by tractor to Athupakkam village.

  • Planting Sites: The seeds were planned to be sown in Athuppakam Lake Area.

  • Timeline: The sowing activity was planned and completed within a single day.

Objective

The primary goal of this initiative was to plant 10,000 palm seeds collected from Panangadu village, Andhra Pradesh. These seeds were sown in Athupakkam village, located in Gummidipoondi, Tiruvallur district, Tamil Nadu.

Planting Site

The palm seeds were planted along the banks of the Athupakkam Lake, following the planting guidelines set by the Tamil Nadu government. This strategic location was chosen to help strengthen the lake’s ecosystem and support water conservation efforts.

Preparation Work

In the days leading up to the event, small pits were carefully prepared to ensure successful germination and ease of planting. This preparation served three main purposes:

  • Allowed excess heat to escape, keeping the soil cool.

  • Created favorable conditions for seed germination.

  • Enabled smooth and quick sowing on the event day.

Long-Term Impact

The Palm Seed Plantation Project in Tamil Nadu is designed to achieve lasting environmental and community benefits:

Prevent Soil Erosion and Encroachment: Palm trees naturally stabilize the soil and act as living barriers along lake banks.

Recharge Groundwater: The deep root systems of palm trees help enhance groundwater levels.

Restore Ecological Balance: Increasing palm tree populations supports biodiversity and strengthens local ecosystems.

Support Livelihoods: Palm trees yield sustainable resources such as jaggery and fruit, which provide income for local communities.

Combat Climate Change: As part of the “Green Tamil Nadu” initiative, palm trees contribute to carbon sequestration and environmental resilience.
