Project 3: GreenSeed Grenades

Seed Ball Throwing

Purpose:

Our seed ball throw event is dedicated to promoting tree planting, environmental conservation, and reforestation. Together, we can make a positive impact on our planet.

What is Seed Ball Throwing?

Seed ball throwing is a fun and innovative way to spread seeds over areas that need greening. Seed balls are made from clay, compost, and native seeds, designed to protect seeds and help them grow naturally.

Benefits:

- Increases green cover and biodiversity

- Prevents soil erosion

- Helps combat climate change

- Supports wildlife habitats

In the month of Independence Day, we launched a large-scale environmental initiative by starting the One Lakh Seed Ball Throwing Project. This project was initiated to address pressing global challenges such as global warming, deforestation, and environmental degradation. Through this effort, we aim to restore green cover, increase biodiversity, and inspire communities to take collective action for the protection of nature and a sustainable future. (Independence Day of India is celebrated on August 15)

Types of Seeds Collected
Neem (Azadirachta indica): Highly drought-tolerant, improves soil fertility, acts as a natural pesticide, purifies air, and supports biodiversity.
Banyan (Ficus benghalensis): Provides shade, prevents soil erosion, supports wildlife, and strengthens local ecosystems.
Bodhi/Peepal (Ficus religiosa): Powers oxygen production, promotes biodiversity, and holds cultural significance in India.
Tamarind (Tamarindus indica): Drought-resistant, aids soil conservation, and produces fruit with medicinal benefits.
Jamun (Syzygium cumini): Thrives in varied Indian climates, has nutritional/health uses, and helps in soil retention and local greenery.

Environmental Importance
- Native seed selection increases germination rates and ecosystem compatibility, supporting restoration of degraded sites and sustainable environment management.
- Planting indigenous species ensures less maintenance, improves soil and water quality, provides habitat for local wildlife, and increases long-term survival of saplings.
- These trees also help in carbon sequestration and combat climate change, which strengthens your project’s impact against global warming.

Testing Method
To ensure the effectiveness of our seed ball project, we conducted germination tests on the seeds inside the seed balls. A sample of seed balls was placed on moist filter paper in controlled, warm conditions with adequate light to simulate natural growing environments. We regularly monitored moisture levels and observed the seeds for signs of sprouting over several days. The rate of successful germination was recorded to assess seed viability and the potential success of the seed balls in the field. This testing process helped us confirm that the seed balls could protect the seeds effectively and promote healthy seedling growth before widespread dispersal.

Preparation Method

Our team and EGF kids worked together to prepare the seed balls through the following method:

- First, we collected native tree seeds and made sure they were clean and dry.
- We mixed clay and compost in equal parts to create a soft, loose texture.
- Water was added slowly until the mixture reached a dough-like consistency—not too sticky or wet.
- Small pieces of the mixture were taken and rolled into balls with several seeds placed inside, each ball roughly the size of a marble.
- These seed balls were then left out to dry fully in a shaded, airy spot for a day or two.
- Once dry, they were ready for planting and greening activities.

This preparation process allowed both our team and the EGF kids to learn and work together in a fun, hands-on way, helping build teamwork and environmental awareness.

Community Seed Ball Throw: Focused Restoration Sites
To address environmental degradation and promote green cover, seed ball throwing activities were conducted in selected restoration sites on specific dates:
• Gummidipoondi: Seed balls were thrown on August 3, 2025, targeting this area for reforestation and soil restoration.
• Athupakkam: On August 15, 2025, the community came together to spread seed balls to enhance local greenery.
• Natham: Seed ball throwing took place on August 17, 2025, aimed at restoring vegetation in this region.
• Elavur: On August 23, 2025, seed balls were dispersed to encourage natural plant growth and biodiversity.
These focused efforts in key locations aim to rejuvenate degraded lands, improve air quality, and strengthen the local ecosystem through the growth of native trees. The initiative fosters community involvement and awareness in environmental sustainability and climate action.
